Statins are a class of cholesterol-lowering medications designed to modify blood lipid concentrations in the control of hyperlipidaemia (abnormally high blood fats). They also help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. The mode of action of statins is to inhibit an enzyme pathway (HMG-CoA reductase pathway) which is also involved in the synthesis of coenzyme Q10. Statins reduce low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels by stimulating receptors in the liver to increase their uptake and removal. They may also increase beneficial lipids such as high density lipoproteins (HDL) and reduce triglycerides. Statin medication also exhibits anti-inflammatory properties which is important when addressing cardiovascular disease risk. Besides their beneficial effects, statin medication can cause certain side effects. These may include muscle pain and fatigue, stomach upsets, sleep reduction, headache, dizziness, blurred vision, liver changes, a decrease in energy levels and mood changes. Individuals taking statin medication should be aware that loss of energy and muscle pain may be signs that Coenzyme Q10 production is compromised. Statin Medication depletes Coenzyme Q10. Taking a natural product, designed to replace the depleted nutrients, alongside prescribed medication represents a positive interaction between pharmaceutical medication and natural supplements. For medium to high-dose statin therapy: Take 100mg— 200mg (3-6 capsules) Statin Support daily with a little flaxseed, olive or coconut oil. General dose for Coenzyme Q10 = 2mg/kg of bodyweight.

Precautions and Contraindications: Warfarin and blood-thinning medication: Long-term, high doses of Coenzyme Q10 may decrease the body’s response to these medications. Use under supervision if exceeding the recommended daily intake for this nutrient. Pregnancy and Breast Feeding: considered safe to use during these times.
